Shibuya Ward Enforcing Year-Round Ban on Public Drinking

Shibuya Ward Assembly has unanimously approved a new regulation prohibiting public alcohol consumption year-round, a significant step to address public drunkenness and its associated issues. This measure expands on a prior seasonal ban initiated in 2019, which initially targeted Halloween due to increasing disturbances and was later extended to New Year’s Eve.

Renowned for its vibrant nightlife, Shibuya boasts numerous bars, pubs, and clubs. However, starting October 1, drinking on the streets will be banned in specific areas, including Shibuya Station, the iconic Shibuya Scramble intersection, Center-gai shopping street, and around Miyashita Park, Maruyamacho night club cluster, and the Shibuya Ward Office.

While the ordinance doesn’t include penalties for violators, the rule is expected to promote voluntary compliance. The prohibition will be enforced from 6 p.m. to 5 a.m. daily, targeting times when alcohol-related problems are most prevalent. This initiative aims to maintain order and ensure a safer environment for both residents and visitors in Shibuya.
