Fujikawaguchiko to erect a barrier to block famous Mt Fuji view.

As early as next week, the town of Fujikawaguchiko, known for its Mt Fuji views, will begin erecting a 2.5m tall barrier above the famous Kawaguchiko Station Lawson. Blocking one of its most famous Mt Fuji viewpoints in an effort to reduce the number of tourists frequenting the storefront.

Unfortunately, as we saw earlier in the year with the bans on the residential streets of Kyoto’s famous Gion district, the bad behavior of international tourists has once again forced the hand of officials.

"It's regrettable we have to do this, because of some tourists who can't respect rules", said a Fujikawaguchiko town official. It’s disappointing to say the least, but I can’t blame them for taking such drastic action. With people littering the streets, ignoring traffic regulations, and disrespecting neighboring businesses by crowding the entrances, even in some cases climbing onto the roofs to get better photos of the famous view. It’s understandable that the town would want to protect itself and its unique charm from these sorts of behaviors.

According to officials, this over-tourism counter measure isn't intended as a permanent solution, so fingers crossed in the not-too-distant future, this iconic view will be back for everyone, including the locals, to enjoy.
